Native wildlife species
This weeks species is the American Beaver ( Castor canadensis)
The Beaver, the largest rodent in North America, one of very few animals that
change the land to be what they need to survive. The beaver dam is made to flood
an area, so they have protection, food and home. This area is also able to
support many other species of plants and animals. A Beaver lodge, or den is made
of mud and sticks to create a waterproof den under and above the water level.
The Beaver have a fine very thick fur and with oil they secrete makes them
waterproof and very warm. This is of course the reason they were trapped to the
edge of extinction. The beaver live in small family group of up to eight with
the previous litter helping with newborns, but then are quickly pushed out. The
Beaver is slowly returning to areas it previously inhabited, if the humans allow
it. Though no where close to early numbers they are stable
,
for now.
