Conservation

Conservation, to protect our natural habitat, our Ohio and world flora and fauna.

There are so many ways this can be done. Farmer's conserve in a fashion that protects our water and land. They use safer, more environmentally friendly chemicals and practice eco-friendly methods of machining the land. For average everyday people, all we have is the little plot of land in which we live. We can make that little plot more inviting to the creatures that show up and by growing natives trees and plants, we can attract more rare species to the area.

A thick green yard seems pretty, but it is a sterile plot for wildlife, only rabbits and deer like it.(once the chemicals are gone) Having a native flower garden (or many) attract wildlife and keeps our species around. NOT USING CHEMICALS (see the top ten page) or at least not as much or often will help, also. The constant use of chemicals in the yard contaminates the water system when everyone in a neighborhood does it. Putting up a bat box or bird box and making sure no Starling's or European sparrows nest in them will help natives species like bats*, Bluebirds and Swallows. Making a small garden pond could attract toads, frogs and snakes.                                                                                                                                                              bumblebee moth->

Inspiring your children to love nature and teach them and yourself to reduce, reuse and recycle can do lot as well. To live your life more eco-friendly, better mpg car, use less electricity or if you have the means, get a wind turbine or solar panels. Inevitably, government and corporate officials will have to change to make another huge impact on the way we use Mother Earth. That has to be done by government regulations and an issue I won't start on. But, you can help...

...By being an active citizen, with the internet, these days everyone can be an active citizen. All of the wildlife charities send out wildlife e-mail alerts to members. You do not have to donate to be members of their e-mail alerts and be able to send messages and make phone calls to your state and federal officials. The issues are many, as are the citizens who attempt to change the way nature is treated.

Another way to help Ohio's wild areas is to buy wildlife car plates and stamps. This money is used to keep important areas healthy and available.

* Some species of Bats are in serious trouble, from the white nose syndrom.
